Several configuration screens — including the health questionnaire editor and the grading scheme rank editor — let you change the order of items. If the reorder controls are not responding, work through the steps below.
Symptom
Dragging a grip handle or clicking an up/down button produces no visible change, or the item jumps back to its original position after you release it.
Step 1 — Check which control to use
The health questionnaire editor uses up and down chevron buttons (not drag-and-drop) to move questions. Look for the ChevronUp and ChevronDown icons on the left side of each question row. Drag-and-drop with the grip handle icon is a visual indicator only on this screen — use the chevron buttons.
The grading scheme rank editor also uses up and down chevron buttons. Drag-and-drop is not available on this screen.
Step 2 — Check for boundary conditions
- The top item's up button is disabled — it cannot move higher.
- The bottom item's down button is disabled — it cannot move lower.
- Disabled buttons appear faded. If you are clicking a faded button, the item is already at the boundary.
Step 3 — Check for a loading state
If data is still loading (a spinner or loading skeleton is visible), reorder buttons are disabled until the data resolves. Wait for the page to finish loading, then try again.
Step 4 — Check your browser and connection
On touch devices (iPad or phone), tap the chevron button squarely — a partial tap on the edge may not register. If the button appears to register but the item does not move, try refreshing the page and repeating.
Step 5 — Verify the save was accepted
After clicking a reorder button, the new order is saved to the server immediately. If a network error occurs, a toast message appears at the bottom of the screen. Check for any error toast and try again. If the error persists, refresh the page and check your internet connection.
Step 6 — Confirm the order persisted
After reordering, refresh the page and reopen the editor. If the order has reverted, the save did not complete. Check that you are not in a read-only role — only staff with the Settings permission can reorder items on these screens.
